NFL Draft: Gophers linebackers looking to follow in Jack Gibbens, Carter Coughlin’s footsteps

Jack Gibbens was a major source of pride within the Gophers football program last season, and with the NFL draft this weekend, the former U linebacker is an example for two players to try to replicate.In last year’s draft, Gibbens wasn’t picked but signed as a free agent with the Tennessee Titans. He impressed Titans coach Mike Vrabel with his intelligence and earned the nickname “Dr. Gibby.”While Gibbens didn’t make the team to start the season, he hung around on the practice squad and was ready to help the Titans in a playoff push to end the season. He had 28 tackles in the final five games, making two starts.Gophers linebacker Mariano Sori-Marin and defensive end/linebacker Thomas Rush are in a similar position this year. ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. - St. Charles County residents complained about bad conditions on Route N in the area.They said the road is breaking up in places on a 5.5-mile stretch of Route N from Highway Z to Sommers Road. It’s a well-traveled road with about 20,000 vehicles a day."The problem is, we’ve got some pavement that’s deteriorating on the roadbed, and the people around here know about it," said Mike Kern. "So they tend to move over to the center lane the fear is we’re going to have a sideswipe, somebody is going to get hurt.”He said he’s been trying to get action. ST. PETERS, Mo. - The St. Peters Board of Aldermen is expected to vote Thursday night on a resolution that calls on the federal and state governments to update these regulations in light of the recent Ohio train derailment. This resolution calls on Congress, the U.S., and the Missouri Department of Transportation to upgrade regulations on the transportation of hazardous materials. They want regulations to require disclosure to the State of Missouri of hazardous materials being transported that could potentially cause environmental damage or pose a threat to wildlife or human life. Rain and snow were diminishing early Friday, giving way to partly sunny, cool skies with light breeze — and a warmer weekend.The high temperature in metro Denver Friday will be 57 degrees, decreasing to 36 degrees at night, according to the National Weather Service. A homeless man allegedly bit off a portion of an officer’s finger during an arrest at a subway station in East Hollywood on Thursday.Los Angeles police officers assigned to the Metro Red Line were conducting routine activities at the Vermont/Santa Monica station when they spotted a man reportedly board the train with a meth pipe around 10:15 a.m.Police approached the suspect and escorted him off the train for a narcotics investigation. As the man was being held, he became violent and began fighting with officers which resulted in a use-of-force incident.During the incident, the suspect bit off a portion of a sergeant's pinky finger, said LAPD. Witnesses said the man also tried to bite other nearby cops before he was subdued.The sergeant was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, doctors confirmed they were not able to reattach the officer's fingertip. Hot, dry conditions mixed with occasional northern winds are expected across Southern California valleys and mountains through the weekend before a cooling trend Monday that could bring cloud cover and an increased chance for rain, according to the National Weather Service.
