Dexter Lawrence contract shows how new deals help Giants create cap space

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:19:48 GMT

Before signing his new contract, Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was due to count $12.4 million against this season’s salary cap. Now, thanks to Lawrence’s four-year extension, the Giants have lowered Lawrence’s 2023 cap hit to $6.653 million, per sources, freeing up more money that GM Joe Schoen can use to run the rest of his team this year. That’s because Lawrence’s extension, which puts him under contract through 2027, includes $22 million of his $59 million total guarantees as a signing bonus. This cap charge gets spread evenly through the five years of his new contract.A low $2.253 million base salary in 2023, plus the $4.4 million annual proration of his signing bonus, keeps Lawrence’s cost down in Year 1.This is the side benefit of signing a top player to a long-term deal, and it is why possible upcoming extensions for left tackle Andrew Thomas and running back Saquon Barkley could further help the Giants’ short-term cause.̶...

McDonald’s found liable for girl’s burns from chicken nuggets. Next up: Jury to determine how much company will pay

McDonald’s is to blame for not warning customers about the dangers of its overheated Chicken McNuggets, one of which fell on a little girl’s lap and left her with second-degree burns on her upper thigh in 2019, a Broward jury ruled Thursday.A second jury will be empaneled to decide just how much McDonald’s and its franchise operator will be ordered to pay.The jury’s decision came after two days of testimony and arguments about what happened to a 4-year-old girl in August 2019 and who was responsible. The girl’s mother, Philana Holmes, testified that she bought Happy Meals for her son and daughter at a Tamarac McDonald’s, receiving no warning that the food might be unusually hot. After receiving the food from the drive-thru window, Holmes said she handed the food to her daughter and son in the back seat and drove away. When a piece of chicken fell on her daughter’s leg, Holmes said she did not realize at first why her daughter was screaming. The girl, identified in court as Olivia, is...

Peter Lucas: How did Americans lose their country? Just ask Biden about his awful border policy

There is a passage in Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 breakthrough novel “The Sun Also Rises” that is applicable today. It occurs during the run of the bulls at the Pamplona Fiesta in Spain where Hemingway and his drinking buddies — disenchanted World War I veterans of the “Lost Generation” used to hang out, go to bullfights and get drunk. It takes place during a boozy conversation between Mike Campbell, a roguish playboy who has squandered his fortune, and Bill Gorton, his drinking buddy.“How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asks.“Two ways,” Mike says. “Gradually and then suddenly.”A similar question might be asked of Americans today in the wake of the illegal immigration invasion along the southern border, an unaddressed trickle of a problem that has turned into a disastrous flood.Sipping wine at an outdoor cafe on Boylston Street today, Bill might ask “How did you lose your country?”“Two ways,” Mike would respond, “Gradually and then suddenly.”Gradually, beginning when Joe Biden halted construct...

If approved for TSA PreCheck, travelers can pass through airport security without taking off their shoes or belts. They can also leave electronics and compliant liquids inside their bags. And without all that fumbling around of clothes, shoes and laptops, TSA PreCheck tends to improve security wait times. Across airports that have separate PreCheck lanes, the TSA says, 92% of members wait...

Stock market today: Wall Street slips as households get more nervous

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:19:48 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are slipping Friday as a listless week on Wall Street appears to be heading toward a quiet close, even as big worries continue to roil under the surface. The S&P 500 was 0.5% lower and on pace for a sixth straight week where it moved less than 1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 135 points, or 0.4%, at 33,174, as of 12:24 p.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.7% lower.Despite the seemingly placid moves for the overall market, big swings have swirled underneath amid worries about a possible recession, high inflation and the U.S. government inching toward what could be a catastrophic default on its debt. It’s not just Wall Street that’s concerned. Sentiment among U.S. consumers is tumbling, according to a preliminary survey by the University of Michigan. That’s a worry because strong spending by consumers has been one of main pillars keeping an already slowing economy from sliding into a recession. Joanne Hsu, director...

Hidemaro Fujibayashi and Eiji Aonuma were not done playing in the sandbox they helped create.Fujibayashi was the director and Aonuma the producer of Nintendo’s “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.” The 2017 release eschewed the beloved series’ familiar conventions and presented gamers with a massive adventure in the inviting open world of Hyrule. It was arguably the most ambitious game Nintendo had produced, but even with two releases of extra downloadable content, the development team felt they left a lot of ideas on the table. With this week’s release of “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” a direct sequel to “Breath of the Wild” six years in the making, gamers get to see many of those ideas finally take form.“Looking at the Hyrule we created, I became convinced that there were still a lot of different opportunities and possibilities to play in that world,” Aonuma told The Canadian Press from New York through a translator in a recent interview.“And we kind of became exc...
