How Avalanche coach Jared Bednar survived disastrous first season, multiple second-round exits and suspicion he might lose his job: “All I think about is winning.”

The players finished eating but stayed seated in the Four Seasons hotel meal room. They knew the drill.Jared Bednar had called a team meeting last spring when the Avalanche landed in St. Louis after a demoralizing Game 5 loss. With an off day in the late stages of a tense second-round playoff series, the coach wanted to check on his team’s headspace.“We didn’t want a repeat of Vegas,” he told The Post.A year earlier, the Avalanche coughed up a 2-0 series lead to the Golden Knights — their third consecutive year getting eliminated in the second round. So when they started to show cracks in the armor with a two-game lead over the Blues, memories came flooding back. The Avs led a potential close-out Game 5 at home in the final minute. It was the closest they had come in Bednar’s tenure to exorcising the second-round demons. Flying back to St. Louis for Game 6 felt as far as they’d been.“He really wanted us to get over that hump,” forward Andrew Cogliano recalled...

Kiszla vs. Gabriel: Should the Broncos trade up, back or stay put in next week’s draft?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:37:47 GMT

Kiz: It’s awfully quiet down at Broncos headquarters, and I don’t know if that’s because new coach Sean Payton is anti-social or he doesn’t have anything good to say about the upcoming NFL draft. As we all know too well, Denver is stuck with only five picks after emptying the cupboard to acquire quarterback Russell Wilson and Payton. So I will ask you: With no pick prior to No. 67 overall in the third round, how many rookie starters can general manager George Paton give Payton in this draft?Gabriel: Oh, right, the Broncos. The local football team, right? It has been a quiet stretch outside the Dove Valley headquarters, though the team is a week into offseason Phase 1 and just more than a week from (mostly a guess here), the least exciting draft in recent memory for the Broncos? Five picks, all in Round 3 or later. But hey, Paton has been good in the third round so far through his first two drafts in Denver. His three picks: Quinn Meinerz and Baron Browning in...

Commuter train routes between O.C. and San Diego resume over repaired track

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:37:47 GMT

Commuter train routes between Orange County and San Diego have resumed Monday after repairs to the track.During the six-month long repairs, frustrated commuters had to get off the train at the Irvine Metrolink station, take a bus to Oceanside and get back on the train to get further south.Last summer, a section of train tracks in San Clemente was shut down due to stabilization issues. “Emergency repair work had to be done in order to stabilize the tracks and make sure there is no movement in the track itself,” Jason Jewell, managing director of the Lossan Rail Corridor Agency, said. The work affected Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner passengers. In February the tracks were considered stable enough to resume weekend service, months ahead of the weekday service resuming Monday. As part of this reopening, Amtrak is offering a 30% discount on the Pacific Surfliner route. To use it, you have to buy the tickets this week and use them by the end of May.

Mods, Queens and 2manydjs at Coachella

Mods, Queens and 2manydjs at Coachella: Cynics might say that a Coachella crowd needs to listen to  Nottingham, England, band the Sleaford Mods. They might say that this is the perfect crowd to be faced with the Mods’ tunes mocking bands that try too hard (“DIWhy”) and trendy culture (“So Trendy”). Sadly, they didn’t play the former on Sunday but they did play the latter. They were superb. Anti-tory, pro-labor and swimming in punk-poetry, the Mods’ set was a resounding success. There are elements of a contemporary John Cooper Clarke about the vocal delivery and lyrics, and that’s no bad thing. After the glory of Angele on Friday, we were happy to hear some more French language music. Christine & the Queens‘ style is very different — far darker and introspective — but no less memorable. The songs are half and half-ish French/English, and that works too.“[My] first Coachella was very impressive, quite a mileston...

AKRON, Ohio — Eight police officers who fired dozens of rounds at Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man, following a car and foot chase will not face criminal charges in his death because a grand jury declined to indict them, Ohio’s attorney general announced Monday.Walker’s death last June sparked protests in Akron after police released body camera footage showing him dying in a hail of gunfire. Police said he had refused to stop when they tried to pull him over for minor equipment and traffic violations, though they haven’t specified further. Police say Walker fired a shot from his car 40 seconds into the pursuit.Officers chased the car on a freeway and city streets until Walker bailed from the still-moving vehicle, ignored officers’ commands and ran into a parking lot where he was killed while wearing a ski mask, body cam video showed. Authorities said he represented a “deadly threat.” A handgun, a loaded magazine and a wedding ring were found on the driver’s seat of his car.Wa...

Murder trial of reputed Oakland gang member delayed amid dispute over judge

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:37:47 GMT

The murder trial for a reputed Oakland gang member — a trial that was nearly called off, after Alameda County’s district attorney offered a controversial plea deal, later rejected by a judge — was delayed Monday amid a dispute over who will preside over the case. The decision to postpone the trial of Delonzo Logwood, 32, came after the Alameda County Superior Court judge overseeing his case, Mark McCannon, opted to have another judge from elsewhere in California decide on whether he should remain on the bench for Logwood’s trial.McCannon’s role came under fire from newly-elected District Attorney Pamela Price after he criticized and rejected a plea deal Price had offered and Logwood had rejected. The deal would have dismissed charges in two of the killings while capping prison time at 15 years for the third.Price’s approach to criminal justice and high-level murder prosecutions has gained widespread attention; the county’s top prosecutor has said she intends to purs...
