The Loop Fantasy Football Report Week 9: Cousins hard to replace for Vikings, fantasy mavens

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 18:14:00 GMT

Replacing a productive quarterback with a torn Achilles’ tendon can be tough for a professional football team like, say, your Minnesota Vikings. But losing someone like Kirk Cousins at the midway point of the fantasy football season can be equally crushing. The Vikings are turning to rookie Jaren Hall and recently acquired journeyman Josh Dobbs in the hopes of salvaging their so-far 4-4 campaign. For fantasy mavens needing a sudden replacement for No. 8, the prospects aren’t much rosier. The QB quarterback shortage has never been more acute than this week, thanks to starters who are injured (Justin Fields, Matthew Stafford, Deshaun Watson) and standouts who are on bye (Trevor Lawrence, Jared Goff, Russell Wilson, Brock Purdy).Where can you turn? Here are five guys you might still be able to claim on waivers:Sam Howell (Commanders) – If you’re lucky, this under-the-radar guy is still available. But his 2,146 passing yards and 13 TD passes in the first eight games probably have landed hi...

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 18:14:00 GMT

For the second straight year, Wayzata kept Woodbury from winning its first state boys soccer crown. It did so again in an unlikely way. And one round earlier.Tyler Baker scored on a penalty kick at the end of the first overtime. and the Trojans will have a chance to defend their state title following a 3-2 win over the Royals in a Wednesday morning Class 3A semifinal in U.S. Bank Stadium.“It can be a cruel game,” Woodbury coach John Engen said.In the 2022 championship game, Wayzata tied the score in the final two minutes of regulation, then won 3-2 on a ricochet off a Woodbury defender early in overtime. This year, Lassi Koivukangas was pulled down by a Royals’ defender in the penalty box. Scoreboards in the stadium hit triple zeroes, but it was ruled the infraction occurred with one second remaining in the extra session.“Lassi created that scoring chance. He would have had a shot on goal, and they denied him that. We thought it was a penalty kick for sure,” Wayzata coach Dominic Duen...

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 18:14:00 GMT

The Gophers football team enter November with its bowl projections all over the map — from Tampa to Tennessee, and Detroit to Dallas.Minnesota (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) has four more conference games to better determine where the Gophers might go in December, but three popular picks have emerged among 11 projections reviewed by the Pioneer Press on Wednesday. The most-popular pick is the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit, which means prognosticators don’t think too highly of how the Gophers will finish the regular season. The U went to the Quick Lane Bowl after a 5-7 season in 2015 and a 6-6 mark in 2018.Three different outlets picked this one, including The Athletic, Athlon Sports and the Action Network. They each have the U playing a different Mid-American Conference team — Ohio, Eastern Michigan and Miami (Ohio). The second-most-popular pick is the Pinstripe Bowl (ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura and College Football Network), but the Gophers went there last season, so a repeat visit is highly unlikely for ...
